What’s Really Inside a Diabetic’s Bag?
Share
If you live with Type 1 diabetes, your bag is more than just an accessory - it’s your lifeline. Whether you’re heading to work, catching up with friends, or travelling, what’s inside can make all the difference.
The daily essentials
Every person with diabetes has a slightly different routine, but most bags will include:
- Blood glucose monitor or CGM reader for quick checks on the go.
- Insulin pens or pump supplies, because you never know when you’ll need them.
- Hypo snacks (fast-acting carbs) like jellybeans, jelly snakes or our favourite, lolly bananas.
- Lancet and back-up needles - spares are non-negotiable.
- Ketone strips or emergency items, because it's better to be safe than sorry.
These essentials keep you safe and in control, but they can also make your bag feel chaotic if you’re not organised.
The “just in case” items
Beyond the must-haves, many of us carry extras like:
- Water bottles to stay hydrated.
- Chargers or spare batteries for pumps, readers, or phones.
- Medical ID or info card for emergencies.
- Everyday items like your wallet, phone, lip balm, and sunglasses.
Suddenly, your bag isn’t just a bag - it’s your mobile health station.

The challenge - function vs style
The problem? Most everyday bags weren’t designed with diabetes in mind. You either juggle pouches inside a regular bag or settle for something practical but not your style. You shouldn’t have to compromise on confidence.
A smarter way to carry it all
That’s why we started T1DE. Our Essential Crossbody Bag is designed for people with Type 1 diabetes - with functional compartments for everything and a design you’ll actually want to wear. Diabetes management is part of your life, but it doesn’t have to define your style.
